Isla Holbox: a Bounty-style island with Caribbean vibes
Holbox lies at the northern tip of Yucatán, in the Yum Balam nature reserve. It is a small island with lots of palm trees, sand roads and colorful murals. Hardly any cars drive here: you rent a golf cart or bike and explore the island at your own pace. There are great little restaurants and in the evening you’ll find a few nice bars. A cocktail bar is not missing either.

At low tide you also wade through the shallow water to the sandbar at Punta Mosquito. You can also watch the sunset at Punta Cocos and take a boat trip through the mangroves. From roughly June through September you can swim with whale sharks from Holbox. On dark evenings you can go kayaking among the glowing plankton.
We went looking for flamingos on Holbox. Unfortunately they weren’t there during our trip. Later we read in a Dutch newspaper that flamingos had unexpectedly landed… in the Netherlands. Unbelievable! Want to be sure to see them? The Celestún nature reserve near Mérida is also home to lots of flamingos.

How to get to Holbox: from Cancún you drive about 2.5 hours to the port town of Chiquilá. There you take the ferry, which takes about 25 minutes. Park a rental car in a guarded lot in Chiquilá. There are also shuttles from the airport and downtown Cancún.

Isla Mujeres: a cozy island close to Cancún
Isla Mujeres lies opposite Cancún and can be reached by ferry in about 25 minutes, for example with Ultramar from Puerto Juárez. Here too you rent a golf cart, but the roads are paved. That is immediately a big difference if you’re torn between Isla Holbox or Isla Mujeres. Lie on Playa Norte and drive to Punta Sur, the southernmost point, for the view over the sea.

In the small center you’ll find fun cocktail bars and restaurants. There are a lot of Americans, but it’s very friendly! During the day many day-trippers also come from Cancún. So stay at least one night, and you’ll have the island a lot quieter in the evening and morning. From Isla Mujeres you can also take a lovely boat trip to the uninhabited bird island of Isla Contoy.
